For beginners

As an African woman, I grew up thinking that an African woman can only have long hair if she's biracial or its in her genes. I've had shoulder length hair virtually all my life and I was OK with it. However, in October 2013, my hair started breaking really bad and desperate for the solution I searched the internet. Mehn, I was amazed!! I saw pictures and videos of African and my fellow Nigerian women who had long healthy hair. What surprised me about all of this is that they didn't promise any quick fixes or magic potions. It was plain ol' hard work. But being the infojunkie I am, I didnt officially start my hair journey till June 2014. I wanted to be properly armed and ready.
Now in less than 6 months, my hair is longer and much healthier.
This is to help and guide you on how you can all begin your hair journey.
What you will need:
- A moisturing shampoo (sulfate free)
- A clarifying shampoo (with sulfate)
- A moisturizing deep conditioner
- A protein deep conditioner
- A leave-in conditioner
- A wide-tooth comb
- A satin scarf or bonnet
- Hair accessories like clips, ponytail holders e.t.c
Your regimen should basically look like this (you can modify it to suit you):
-Washing
-Deep condition
-Leave-in condition
-Dry
Note the following:
-Always use a sulphate-free shampoo to wash. however, use a sulphate-containig shampoo once or twice a month to remove build-up
- Deep condition your hair always after washing. This keeps your hair soft yet strong to withstand breakage. apply conditioner to hair, cover with a shower cap(or even nylon bag) and leave on for at least one hour. Rinse off.
-Apply a leave-in conditioner afterwards.Make sure your hair is damp, not wet. do not dry your hair with a towel, use a T-shirt instead.
- Air dry or roller set. direct heat (in the form of blow dryers, flat irons, curling irons) are bad for the hair if used frequently.
-Moisturise with a water-based moisturiser i.e. water is the first ingredient on its list of ingredients. then seal by apply a 100% natural oil to your hair. Do this daily or 3 times a week.
-Always cover your hair with a satin scarf/bonnet when going to bed. or you can opt for a satin pilowcase.
